COLORADO COACH- WINTER 2018 FROM THE SPORT PRESIDENTS TENNIS President Diane Wolverton Hello, Tennis Coaches! I am including the USPTA/High School Tennis Coaches agenda for the February 10 & 11th clinic. We are bringing back breakfast on Sunday when we will have the coaches portion, but please feel free to attend any of the events during the weekend! In the future, if you would like for us to have our own tennis clinic, like we used to, please voice your opinion and let me know what you would like to see at our clinic, when you would like for it to take place, and where. We will tailor it to our needs! If you love the way it is now and it is working for you, we are definitely able to stay where we are. I’m simply checking in with you for input. Being your representative for tennis means I care about issues which affect you and your team. I need to hear what you want and ways to achieve that. My goal, and hopefully yours, is to make tennis in Colorado aces! I will be at the clinic Sunday morning, and possibly some part of Saturday. I look forward to seeing you there and meeting new faces! Arnold EdS and I am the new president of wrestling for the Colorado High School Coaches Association. It is my privilege to serve as the new wrestling president, and I am very excited to be taking on this new role. I have been employed by Aurora Public Schools since 2006 as a Social Studies teacher. This season is my 13thth year being a wrestling coach in APS. I coach because I am a believer that knowledge needs to be passed on. I believe that wrestling as a student not only builds character and confidence, but also gives a sense of accomplishment to the athletes we serve. These personality traits and qualities will benefit wrestlers at whatever level they participate. My mission at CHSCA is to support coaches through our member benefits, recognize members for outstanding work, provide continued opportunities for coaches to develop their craft through clinics and seminars, and host the All-State Games. I look forward to working with all of you and supporting you through CHSCA. Fall Coaches Clinic The annual Fall Wrestling Coaches Clinic held at Aurora Hinkley was hosted by longtime Chaparral wrestling coach Rod Padilla, now the A.H. athletic director. Former Head Olympic Freestyle Coach Jim Humphrey talked with the coaches. Jim is relocating to northern Colorado where he is establishing a Regional Training Center under the auspices of Rocky Mountain National Events. Humphrey’s main philosophy is to have each individual “master a couple of techniques and situations that you can perform on anybody. Good tactics include knowing how to build upon and maintain a lead. Before you go to bed each night, go through the mental imagery of executing a successful move.” Humphrey continues: “From Dan Gable, I learned to push everyone hard but also to know when to back off. I treat each wrestler as an individual; I let them know that I care about them as a person. My success as a coach comes from their success as an individual. If you know how to overcome adversity, how to come from behind to win, then you maintain faith in your best effort.” The next guest speaker, Pueblo County Head Coach Eddie Soto, named 2017 Coach of the Year for leading his team to its first state title, shared his philosophy of coaching. Coach Soto stressed the importance of building a successful youth program. In the afternoon, Middle Park’s now retired head coach Cal Cherrington, who also led his program to its only state title and whose son Ben won three state titles, talked with the coaches about the importance of maintaining perspective. More than records or titles, you recognize what is really important are the life lessons you imparted. Over time, you learn to relax and to enjoy the journey. Outgoing President Erik Goodling is to be commended for his leadership over the past two years. Succeeding him as President will be Aurora Hinkley’s Darin Arnold. Assisting Darin in his new role will be Vice-President Bill Barron, who previously served terms as VP and President.
