COLORADO COACH- SPRING 2018 FROM THE SPORT PRESIDENTS Administrator, a parent or a player. In most of those cases, they were being ripped unjustifiably. Sometimes it appears the negatives outweigh the positives! However, as coaches, we can’t lose sight of the real reasons why we coach. We already know that we don’t coach for the money or the heartaches that go along with coaching. Below are 5 of my top reasons for coaching: Maybe you have other reasons for coaching, and I would love to hear your views as well: #5: It’s Fun!! As a coach you can create a connection and bonding with not only players, but your coaches. Some individuals I have coached with are now some of my best friends. There’s nothing like a grand slam home run in the bottom of the 7th inning! Its sure a lot of fun! #4: Assisting in school spirit. There’s a bigger picture than our specific sport that we are coaching. We are just one piece of the puzzle in developing the spirit of the students. They have team pride and represent their school to the student body. It’s a always a big deal (remember)?? #3: It fun to share our knowledge and to teach the basics and fundamentals of a specific sport. I just read a recent statistic about how important it is for girls to develop self confidence in their early years to help them become strong, young women. #2: “Give it back to the Game”. Has sports been generous to you? Personally, I credit sports and my coaches for the person that I am today. Sports brought me from a middle class income where my father worked in a GMC factory in Michigan, and my Mom was a house wife. We didn’t have a lot of money. And yet, because of sports, I was able to receive an athletic scholarship to one of the most prestigious schools in this country, The University of Denver. It was all because of sports! God knows that I could have never afforded to attend that school. I met my beautiful (yes she made me put that in) wife of 37 years at DU. God has blessed me with three beautiful and intelligent daughters and 8 grandchildren – all because of my connection with sports. I therefore, feel personally obligated to try and prepare my young athletes for their possible future. I’ve been very blessed, and I hope that they have the same opportunities that I did through their sports careers. #1: The number One Reason that we coach is or course, because of the kids! We feel like they deserve the best teaching and it is our hope that they can learn some important life skills through playing for us. A few wins wouldn’t hurt, but their personal development is of the utmost importance for us. One day, I want my players to get together at a 10-year High School Reunion and talk about how much fun they had, how much they learned and the positive experience that they had playing High School (or Jr High School) sports. Don’t ever forget you may be a replacement father or mother for that child and not even know it. Never underestimate the positive impact that you have on that child and their bright future.
